§01Deductible: your share, first
If a covered repair costs more than your deductible, the insurer pays the amount above it, up to your limits. Collision and comprehensive usually have deductibles. Liability coverage typically does not.
§02Limits: the ceiling
Limits cap what the insurer pays. If a liability claim exceeds your limit, you may be personally responsible for the difference. That is why people sometimes choose limits higher than their state requires.
§03The trade-off
In general, a higher deductible means a lower premium but more cash needed after a loss, and higher limits mean a higher premium but more protection against a large claim. There is no universal right answer.
§04A calm way to think about it
- Could you pay the deductible from savings this month?
- Would the limits cover a serious accident, or would your savings and home be exposed?
- Does a lender or lease require particular coverage?
§05Ask your insurer or agent
Your own insurer or agent can show exactly how a change affects your policy. We cannot, because we do not give quotes or rates.
