§01The header block
Near the top you will find the insurer’s name, the policy number, the named insured, the mailing address, and the policy period, which is the start and end date of coverage. Confirm your name and address are spelled correctly and the dates are what you expect.
§02Vehicles and drivers
Each insured vehicle is listed, usually with its year, make, model and vehicle identification number (VIN). Listed drivers appear too. If a vehicle was sold or a household member moves in or out, this is the section to compare against real life.
§03Coverages, limits and deductibles
A table shows each coverage, the limit that applies, and the deductible where one exists. Liability limits are written as several numbers, so look for a key that explains them. Compare the table with the guide on the three main coverages.
§04Premium and payment details
The premium is the amount charged for the policy period, often shown for the full term and for each installment. Fees, discounts and surcharges may be itemized.
§05Endorsements and lienholders
Endorsements are add-ons or changes to the standard policy. If a lender finances your vehicle, it may appear as a lienholder or loss payee. Both can change what happens when you make a claim.
