§01First, safety
Check on everyone. If anyone may be hurt, or the road is blocked in a dangerous way, call 911. Move to a safe place if the cars can be driven and local rules allow it, and turn on hazard lights.
§02Collect the basics
- Names, phone numbers and insurance information for the other drivers.
- License plates and the make and model of each vehicle.
- Photos of the scene and of damage to every car.
- Names of any witnesses, and the location.
§03Police reports
Rules about when an accident must be reported to police differ by state. A report can also help later with a claim. Ask the officer how to get a copy.
§04Talking with insurers
Many policies ask you to report accidents promptly. Stick to facts when you describe what happened. You do not have to guess about fault or about injuries.
§05Keep your own notes
Write down what you remember as soon as you can, keep repair estimates and receipts, and track names and claim numbers. If you are unsure about your rights, consider speaking with a licensed professional.
